Statement
My studio practice is focused on creating small-scale tonal paintings and drawings from my own photographs and film stills, as well as found images such as postcards and prints. They are produced by continuously removing and applying (usually) oil paint on to a variety of glossy, smooth surfaces to describe a quiet drama through light and shade, revealing an emotional weight within an image.
My work often depicts intimate or commonplace scenes, such as domestic settings, and contemplates a pausing or slowing of time. I am also interested in exploring the ambiguities of tone which can bring uncertainty to the reading of an image and question scenes that appear very familiar.
